This is one of the pictures from our Labor Day weekend trip to Como Zoo. Hanging out in the butterfly tent, Kaylee suddenly decides to let her inner hip hop star come out.
Seriously, I have no idea where this came from.

Thing #25 of the 23 More Things on a Stick program has us looking at little doodads that improve the functionality of your blog, either for you or for your readers. Here’s a few thoughts:

I hate SnapShots and have disabled it in my blog. I also have set my browser not to display them when I visit other websites. Why do I think that SnapShots is a horrible abomination? Because it solves a problem that doesn’t really exist by compromising the readability of the page. Ever tried to read a blog post that is festooned with these things? Every move of the mouse seems to rollover one of the links. And everytime you rollover one of the links, this little popup window appears. It’s too small to really give you a preview of the linked page. It’s just the right size to block what you are trying to read and throw you off track. The things are also covered with ads. Ugh. Please don’t use SnapShots.

Having gotten that off my chest, I’ll say that I’ve been using a Flickr badge for sometime to show recent pictures from our photostream and it’s really cool. Very easy to install, too. Just paste in a bit of HTML code to a text box and you’re ready to go.

I’ve heard a lot about Disqus but don’t get enough comments to my blog to warrant spending the time it would take to set it up. Maybe I’ll take a look. Maybe I would get more comments with a better commenting system.

One night a few weeks ago, Rayna and I were going through our bedtime ritual. We were sitting in a rocking chair in her room, enjoying a few minutes of quiet time, when she suddenly said “Hi bunny rabbit!” She was pointing at her closet door where I saw a shadow cast by one of her toys in front of the night light. It was shaped (you guessed it) vaguely like a bunny rabbit.

Every night since then, Rayna looks for the bunny rabbit. Some nights he’s there, usually because Nicole or I make sure things are arranged just right. Some nights, he’s not there. We explain that he went to a party or is at work. She’s always so happy on the nights when the bunny rabbit is there to wish her a good night.

I just wanted to record this so that I can look back on this blog post some day and chuckle over the memory.

Election Day is finally here. It’s too early to have much in the way of results but I’ll keep an eye on the TV tonight in hopes of good news. I voted late this morning, around 11:00, and had no problems. No lines, no confusion–everything went pretty well. I’m curious to hear how it went around the rest of the country. There’s been a lot of efforts to purge voters from the rolls in heavily-Democratic districts. At least we were ready for it this time. The party had a lot of monitors and lawyers standing by in case of dirty tricks like we saw in 2000 and 2004. Not this time. I’m also very curious to hear how it went in the states using electronic voting stations. I’m not at all comfortable with those things and worry that they are an electoral disaster waiting to happen.

But enough of that. Things have been going pretty well in the family, albeit at a hectic pace. We continue preparing to move. Seems like we’re writing checks left and right and generally spending money like drunken sailors. We’ve been furniture shopping; the new house is 2 or 3 times the size of our current place and we need to fill it up. Not all at once, of course. But we do need more things to sit on. We’re also in the process of getting all the utilities connected and disconnected, as the case may be. November 25 will be here before we know it.

Rayna is excited about everything. We took her and Kaylee there a couple of weeks ago to measure and take pictures of the interior and she understood very well what was going on. We went down to the two children’s bedrooms and she went into one and loudly announced that this was “Rayna’s room!” Upon seeing the big soaker bathtub that is much larger than ours, she just stood looking at it for awhile and then simply said “How do I get in?”

Halloween was a lot of fun. I don’t have any pictures up yet; most of the ones I took came out fuzzy. Seems I had a setting on the camera misadjusted. Urgh. We took them to my office to trick or treat and a lot of others took pictures too, so I’m hopeful to get some photos from them. So stay tuned for that. Rayna was a princess and Kaylee was a flower. That night, we went to a neighborhood church that was having games for awhile and then we trick or treated on our block. The girls had a good time but Rayna got awful wound up and had a hard time sleeping. She ended up sitting with me on the couch watching TV until 10:30 or so before she finally settled down. The fact that I insisted on watching boring news helped too.

Not much else to report. It’s almost time to start getting the girls ready for bed, after which I’ll settle down to watch the election returns. Crossing my fingers…

So, what have we been doing in the months since our last blog posts? Besides setting up this website, mostly doing work around the house. In June, we replaced all the carpet and put in new floors. It was meant to be a three-day project but took more like five with an unexpected stay in a local hotel. Once it finally got done, however, it was all worth it.

Having got that done, we started work on getting the house ready for sale. What with the market being what it is, we really knocked ourselves out to get every edge. Fresh paint throughout the interior and anything not absolutly essential for day-to-day life moved to storage. We’re listed with Re/Max and trying to keep everything neat and clean while we wait for that buyer. So if you know someone looking for a house in Rochester, send them our way, willya?

Welcome to our new home on the web! I decided to close out our old blog and start this one in order to have more control over the final product. This is a hosted website, as opposed to the free page that we used to have. That means it took more effort on my part to set up but I will also have more control over the interface and functionality. There are a number of things I plan to do, mostly requiring Javascript (which was not allowed on the old WordPress page).

I also like the new URL.

All the posts from our old blog have been migrated here so you shouldn’t need to visit the old page again. Nevertheless, it will stay up for the foreseeable future to help ease the transition.

I also have been making an active effort to try and imagine ways to use Web 2.0 tools to achieve goals rather than just purchase or create something from scratch.

I’ve been using the personal folder in EBSCO for awhile now but was not aware of the web page composer functionality. I’m pretty impressed at how it allows you to create simple but effective websites to provide access to search results and serve as a portal for further searching. I think the Help information needs to be beefed up a little to explain to non-techies what you can do with your page since there is no web-hosting. Better yet, EBSCO should provide some basic webhosting so that users can save their pages directly “to the web”. That would be very cool.

I learned something new about ELM!
