23 Things on a Stick

23 Things on a Stick is a self-paced educational program for library folks in Minnesota who wish to learn more about all things Web 2.0. While you can argue about the often overused term “Web 2.0”, I don’t think you can argue that user-created content is reshaping how many people think of the Internet. It’s important that libraries understand the concepts and tools loosely grouped together under the Web 2.0 umbrella because many of our patrons are already there. And they won’t be our patrons for long if we are ignorant of what is going on online.

Participants in the program go through a series of tutorials illustrating tools that enable Internet users to participate actively instead of merely consuming content created by someone else. The first step is to create a blog, which is then used to record the participant’s progress on the other 22 step. As I already have a blog, I’m simply going to record my progress here. I’m supposed to set up an avatar, which I find irritating–I find that whole concept to be annoying for reasons that aren’t entirely clear. So look for an avatar in this space soon. Enjoy it while it lasts ’cause I’m taking it down as soon as I get through the program. 🙂

Welcome to the 23 Things. Can you just create a link to the avatar? That might be a reasonable compromise. I should note that I tried to argue for a “representation” rather than an avatar in the initial discussion of the project– for probably a lot of the same reasons.

Anyway, check out the other SELS members’ blogs and have some fun.

Don’t take my ranting about avatars too seriously. I don’t really mind adding one here. I was feeling cranky yesterday.

Congrats on getting started with 23 Things on a Stick! We’ll have fun along the way and there will be regional prizes to all who complete the program by National Library Week. Enjoy!
